The Winner

My dad and I used to have a game---when he came home from work the first person to say “I love you” would be declared “the winner”. He would go to elaborate lengths to “sneak” unnoticed into our house at dinner time just to be declared “the winner”. In the past few weeks,  I taught my 4 year old daughter this same game.  She loves it. Everytime I come home she is right there, ready to say  “I love you” and declare herself “the winner”.

After a few days of our game she noticed that she was always winning the game.  I could make up a lot excuses for this but frankly this was humbling to me. As with most moms, I instinctively place my children’s physical needs above my own but for some reason the simple words of “I love you” were getting lost in the incredible busyness of everyday living.  My husband and I often say that kids have such good memories because they have a lot less to think about then adults.  That’s probably very true but while my daughter was making it a priority in her day to say “I love you”----I was allowing other priorities to overshadow my statement of these three simple but yet powerful words.

While we all are familiar with the busyness of life, when was the last time you stopped to tell your family, friends and the Lord that you simply love them? Are those words getting overshadowed by other priorities?  I decided that no matter how busy I was that I was going to be a “winner” at our game. So when I surprised my daughter with an “I love you” , her face lit up. I had made her a priority and she thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Amazing how such a simple statement can teach someone so much about their priorities………..
